Opening Day 1957

April 1, 1957 -- Opening Day is upon us again, as the FBL franchises take the field tonight to compete for the Federal Cup. Oakland, the defending champs will face stiff competition this season, as many franchises used free agency to re-tool their rosters for the coming season.

  • Ed Boone of the Portland Pioneers capped a fine season by winning the Federal Baseball League batting crown with his .382 average. Boone collected 174 hits, 28 home runs, scored 83 times and knocked in 107 runs. #
  • LF Harvey Sharp of the Oakland Victory won both the Batter of the Month and Rookie of the Month awards. Recently acquired SP Chuck Sullivan of the Birmingham Cats won the Pitcher of the Month Award #
  • San Diego's Jerry Sims and Tucson's Lewis Carr were suspended by the League Office for 3 games after a inciting a massive bench-clearing brawl on 4/8. Neither player challenged the ruling. #
  • Trade: Minnesota sends OF Brennan Holman to Portland for 1b Alfredo Pinto. #
  • More auditions announced in Minneapolis, Rochester, Denver, Oakland and Seattle today. Calling all baseball fanatics, athletes and former ballplayers, get your gloves oiled and spikes sharpened. It's almost time to play ball! #
