Cuban Professional League divulged its 1950 schedule today, as teams started making spring training preparations. It will be a long drive to the championship, but make no mistake, that drive begins today. Clubs will be faced with tough roster decisions in the coming weeks--the performance of veterans, injuries, and surprising play by newcomers could go a long way to determining that Opening Day roster. |  | Thursday, June 15th, 1950: Cuban Professional League News: First-Year Player Draft Scrutiny begins early in the life of an amateur baseball player. Very likely it started while he was in high school. Scouts have traveled many miles to come up with a portfolio of players who have the potential to play in Cuban Professional League. It all comes to fruition on rookie draft day. It's a crapshoot. Almendares, Habana, Cienfuegos, Mariano and Santa Clara will have the first five cracks at hitting the jackpot this year. According to most baseball analysts, these 10 draftees are most likely to be chosen in the early rounds:
1. Albert López, 18 year-old first baseman out of high-school. 2. Miguel Rodríguez, 18 year-old first baseman out of high-school. 3. Ramón Ochoa, 17 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 4. Júlio Martínez, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. Félix Martínez, 19 year-old second baseman out of high-school. 6. Rubén Esquivel, 20 year-old second baseman out of college. 7. José Pacheco, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 8. Sancho Lambaría, 21 year-old shortstop out of college. 9. Santiago Carbajal, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 10. Pancho Castillo, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. |  | Tuesday, May 16th, 1950: Cuban Professional League News: Draft Pool Revealed With the 1949 rookie draft only 30 days away, teams across Cuban Professional League are preparing their scouting missions, trying to assess their long-term needs, and hoping that they land the prospect that will positively define their club for the next few years. Most of the young men in the draft pool will have gone as far as they can go, but then, a few will surprise and pan out as quality--or even great--professional ballplayers.
