| Breaking News | | Friday, September 8th, 1950: Rumors Swirling in Columbus; Muñóz Wants Out "Don't believe everything you hear." was the word from the team's ownership group after rumors of Tomás Muñóz wanting out of Columbus surfaced late yesterday. No one knows exactly how this news broke and Muñóz laughed it off when told of the story. | | Saturday, September 2nd, 1950: Charles Hits for the Cycle by the Numbers You might say Warren Charles wore out his welcome with the Columbus Explorers. The right fielder gave them fits in today's 15-2 Richmond victory by hitting for the cycle.
"To hit for the cycle" is one of the rarest of feats in a baseball game. This occurs when a player hits a single, double, triple and homerun in the same game, getting every type of hit possible. Charles ended the day with 4 hits in 6 at-bats, 4 runs batted in and 3 runs scored.
Talking to the SION reporters in the postgame interview, he said, "After the first three hits, I thought to myself, This could be the game I hit for the cycle. Record book, here I come! And I got lucky and did it."
W. Charles doubled in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off J. Valera in the 7th, hit an RBI triple in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.
This season Charles is swinging the bat at a .291 pace. He has hit 32 home runs and scored 103 times, while driving in 97. His on-base percentage is .409 and he has played in 132 games. | | Wednesday, August 30th, 1950: Smith Toys with Columbus Richmond starter Robert Smith really did a number on the Explorers today, shutting them out 6-0 on 3 hits in a complete game victory. He issued 3 walks and had 9 strikeouts.
In his postgame comments, the Columbus manager said, "We didn't have good at-bats. I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting... seeing as our team has a bunch of pretty good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Robert... he did an outstanding job today."
This season to date, Smith has fashioned a 20-14 mark and 3.92 ERA in 291.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .266 against him and he has logged 189 strikeouts. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | SS Frank Fanshawe | damaged meniscus (knee) | 2 weeks | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 50-101, .331 PCT | | Position in Division | 7th, 54.0 GB | | Record at home | 27-48, .360 PCT | | Record on the road | 23-53, .303 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 5-8, .385 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 25-24, .510 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 18-32, .360 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 32-69, .317 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 2-8, .200 PCT | | Record in April | 8-20, .286 PCT | | Record in May | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in June | 10-17, .370 PCT | | Record in July | 8-21, .276 PCT | | Record in August | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in September | 2-7, .222 PCT |
