| Breaking News | | Monday, August 4th, 1958: Week's Best Player: Scranton's Rojas 20-year-old Roberto Rojas sent shock waves through Appalachian League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Appalachian League Player of the Week Award.
A newcomer to the league, Rojas made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .500 average, 13 hits in 26 at-bats, no home runs and 2 runs batted in.
Where the Scranton Moose Calves left fielder goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Rojas certainly made his mark last week.
Hitting .378 to date, Rojas has 1 home run and 36 RBIs. He has played in 101 games. | | Thursday, July 10th, 1958: Riley 5-5 Against Moose Calves 5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory... your 5 minutes of fame... you get your name in the record book.
In the Groundhogs 23-6 win over Scranton, William Riley was red-hot today, scorching them for hit after hit at Groundhogs Ballpark.
"To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got a little tight when I realized I had a chance for a 5-hit game. On the last at-bat, I was ready to swing at anything close."
On his big day Riley delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats.
W. Riley hit a solo-shot off J. Unknown in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run double in the 4th, singled in the 6th, walked in the 7th and walked in the 9th.
This season Riley is batting .328 with 86 hits and 11 home runs. He has scored 49 times and has 57 runs batted in. | | Thursday, July 10th, 1958: Beach Rips Scranton for 5 Hits If just anyone could go out and hit a baseball, big dollar contracts wouldn't exist. But they can't, so the good hitters get the big bucks. Red Beach showed how it's done as he went 5 for 7 against the Scranton Moose Calves and helped the Punxsutawney Groundhogs beat them 23-6.
The manager for the Moose Calves told the BNN sportswriters, "We made some bad pitches and he took advantage of it. That's the game of baseball. Don't make mistakes and you win a lot more ballgames."
If Beach keeps hitting like this, he could be headed for a big pay raise.
R. Beach singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 4th, flied out in the 6th, struck out in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off A. Gilbert in the 9th.
In the 1958 campaign Beach has hit at a .337 clip with 30 RBIs, 6 home runs and 59 runs scored. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 56-64, .467 PCT | | Position in Division | 3rd, 34.0 GB | | Record at home | 28-32, .467 PCT | | Record on the road | 28-32, .467 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 3-6, .333 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 14-16, .467 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 26-27, .491 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 30-37, .448 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 12-16, .429 PCT | | Record in May | 18-11, .621 PCT | | Record in June | 8-17, .320 PCT | | Record in July | 13-16, .448 PCT | | Record in August | 5-4, .556 PCT |
