There is great joy in Washington today after the Wild Things thumped Punxsutawney 5-2 to cop the 1958 Appalachian League Appalachian Championship Series. They defeated the Groundhogs 5-1 to take the series.
This was the 2nd time Washington has garnered the league title. During the regular season the Wild Things chalked up a 61-59 mark and finished in second place in the .

 | Friday, August 1st, 1958: Young Baffles Wilkes-Barre
Pete Young humbled the Wilkes-Barre Goobers today at Groundhogs Ballpark. In the 8-0 shutout win, he yielded 4 hits, fanned 3 and walked 1 to pace the Punxsutawney Groundhogs to victory.
This year Young has a 24-11 record with a 4.00 ERA in 46 starts.

 | Friday, August 1st, 1958: July's Top Starter Named in ALA
Albert Pagán took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Month award for July.
The 23-year-old Groundhogs starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 6-4 won-lost record in 13 starts. He has fanned 34 batters in 92.1 innings and sports a 2.83 ERA.
His record in 1958 is 31-9 in 48 starts and Pagán has a 2.80 ERA.
