| Breaking News |  | Friday, September 1st, 1950: Birmingham Starter August's Best Pitcher The elite pitcher this past month in the Federal Baseball League was Bill Parsons of the Birmingham Nationals. He stood head and shoulders above the rest, finishing August with an extraordinary 6-0 record and a 1.98 ERA.
The Nationals star twirler made 6 starts and surrendered 39 hits in 50 innings. He struck out 24 and walked 19.
This season Parsons has a 15-11 mark in 29 starts with a 4.05 ERA. He has given up 205 hits in 224.1 innings, struck out 117 and issued 112 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .244 batting average against him. |  | Monday, August 14th, 1950: Cox Selected FBL Player of the Week It was a week to remember for Robin Cox. After wrapping up a torrid week at the plate, the Birmingham Nationals first baseman was named the Federal Baseball League Player of the Week.
Cox collected 10 hits in 26 at-bats for a .385 average. He also accounted for 10 RBIs, 6 home runs and scored 8 runs.
This year Cox is batting .298 with 137 hits, 44 home runs, 103 RBIs, 69 walks, .392 OBP and has scored 100 runs. |  | Saturday, August 5th, 1950: Birmingham Bats Silenced by Abbott Paul Abbott effectively shut down the Nationals today, blanking them 9-0 on 4 hits, ringing up 6 strikeouts and allowing 1 walk. The Arrows pitcher appeared to get stronger as the game went on.
"I don't know if I was getting any stronger," Abbott said after the game, "I feel like my mechanics were getting better. I was able to make some adjustments and get a little more comfortable out there."
The Nationals skipper said, "We had some opportunities, but weren't able to execute. We just didn't swing the bats very well today."
Abbott has made 13 starts, tossed 132.2 innings, struck out 76 batters and walked 25.
